Root canal treatment involves the removal of the soft inner tooth tissue, often called dental pulp (nerve). This more extensive treatment is sometimes required if the tooth or pulp tissue becomes unhealthy or injured.
When the tooth has trouble with the dental pulp it can often be felt as tooth ache. Sometimes you might not feel any pain at all but an infection may be detected on x-rays.
Your tooth and any dental discomfort can be treated simply through removing the current pulp (nerve) tissue and replacing it with rubber and cement like material. In more difficult or complex cases you may be referred to a root canal specialist called an endodontist. Often a crown (cap) is then placed on top to further protect the tooth.
Root canals often require two or more appointments.
